    Form- Mosaic
    Function- This mosaic was designed to show the emperor's power.
    Content-Justinian is located in the center of his designated mosaic.
    Context- Located in Ravenna Italy
    Tradition- Similar to ancient Greek/Roman mosaics.
    Interpretation-There may be a struggle of power between Justinian and the arch bishop because Justinian's upper body is in front of the bishop, but the Bishop's feet are in front of Justinian's.
    Artistic intent- Justinian is dressed in purple and gold to show his royalty.
    Audience response- Funded by Julianus Argentaruis.

    Function: Used as political propaganda
    Content: emperor holds a paten, a shallow bowl or plate
    Context: Archbishop Maximianus is the only figure labelled, he completed the Basilica of San Vitale.
    Tradition/Change: Roman mosaics were made from colored stones and precious gems while Byzantine mosaics were made out of glass
    Interpretation: Justinian and Theodora are actively participating in Mass as shown by their position over the altar
    Artistic Intent: To show Justinian as the head of church and state
    Audience Response: Fell under the power of Justinian even though they were located in Ravenna, Italy and Justinian ruled from Constantinople
