    Tradition: Contains symbols typical of Christian art, usually the scene contains Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene
    Interpretation: at left is the Old Testament scene of Jonah being swallowed by the whale and returning to life

    Content- Mary is seen holding Jesus' head.
    Context-The period/style is Italian Gothic
    Change- Giotto, the painter abandons Byzantine style of flat art and moves on to a more naturalistic approach of figures.
    Interpretation- The scene's sorrow is emphasized by the grieving angels and barren tree.
    Artistic intent- The diagonal cliff formation directs the eye to the main action.
