    Form-Brass inlaid with silver and gold
    Function- Ceremonial hand washing
    Content- signed by the artist 6 times.
    Context- Was originally located in either Egypt or Syria.
    Change- Unlike other pieces of this time period, the Basin shows people as well as animals.
    Interpretation- May of been a banqueting piece.
    Artistic intent- May of been made for export.
    Audience response- Later used for baptizing of the royal french family.

    Function: used for official ceremonies
    Content: hunting alternate with battle scenes along the side of the bowl
    Context: Artist was Muhammad ibn al-Zain
    Tradition: Vegetal decorations in the backgrounds of the bands
    Interpretation: Some scholars think that a court official named Salar ordered the piece as a gift for his sultan
    Artistic Intent: Testifies the prestige of Islamic art beyond the Islamic world
    Audience Response: Must have been fashioned for a specific Mamluk patron

    Tradition- the fleur de lis is the symbol of the french royal family
    Interpretation- its believed that the artist was very proud as he signed it 6 times
    Artistic Intent- possibly made for reach beyond the islamic world
    Audience Response- reworked when they came to france
