    Function- A christian church dedicated to Mary
    Content- Lancets add to the verticality of this building.
    Context- Located in Chartres, France
    Change- The first Church to have a flying Buttress as part of the original design.
    Interpretation- The dark interior reinforces a spiritual feeling.
    Artistic intent- The vertical nature of the interior pulls the viewers up to the ceiling.
    Audience response- A fire in 1194 forced recronstructuion of most of the building.

      Interpretation:scholasticism stressed in the image of Mary as the seat of wisdom
      Artistic Intent: the seven liberal arts taught as medieval universities are personified in the archivolts
      Audience Response: Importance of the church reflected in the time it took to build-27 years
