    Function-site to house the dead
    Content- The paintings are composed of painterly brush strokes
    Context- Located in Rome, Italy
    Tradition-The paintings are pompeian in style.
    Interpretation- In the Orants Fresco there is a mother and child, which could be the Virgin Mary with Christ.
    Artistic intent- In the Good shepherd fresco, Christ is represented as a shepherd to show how christ saves the sinners who stray from his flock.
    Audience response- Some earlier explorers of the catacombs vandalized it because they believed it was cursed.

    Function: the Orant fresco is an abstract representation of the soul of the deceased
    Content: contained scenes from a Christian woman's life
    Context: Named for Priscilla who donated the land fro her family's burial and then later to Christians
    Tradition: a portrait of Christ which is a pastoral motif in ancient art going back to the Greeks
    Interpretation: parallels between Old and New Testament stories
    Artistic Intent: To embody and represent the Christian faith in the afterlife
    Audience Response: the catacomb contains the tombs of seven popes, was an important Christian burial site

    Context- the greek chapel is named for two greek inscriptions near the entrance
    Tradition- hands are traditionally outstretched in prayer
    Interpretation- symbolism of the good shepherd
    Artistic Intent- to show parallels between old and new testament stories
    Audience Response- seen as a fulfillment of hebrew scripture
